President Bush Meets with President Talabani of Iraq(Sept.10,2008) - 英語演講

PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. President, wele. First of all, I am so pleased to see that you're looking good. The President's health is strong, and that's going to be very important for the people of Iraq. After all, there's been no stronger defender of a free Iraq than President Talabani. I've known him for a long time. He cares deeply about the Iraqi people, and he has been a strong defender of human liberty.

President, thanks for the good conversation we had about the election laws, about the need to get a strategic framework agreement signed. And thank you very much for bringing me up to date on your perspective about life inside of Iraq. It's -- things have changed a lot since we've known each other.

PRESIDENT TALABANI: Of course.

PRESIDENT BUSH: And attitudes are pletely different now that people realize the security situation has changed and mothers can raise their children in a more normal life,日語翻譯. It's still difficult, but there's no doubt that the surge has been effective, which has enabled us to take out troops. Iraqis want there to be fewer U.S. troops, the United States wants there to be fewer U.S. troops, but both of us want to realize that vision based upon success.

And so, Mr. President, wele back. I'm glad you're feeling good. And thank you for the visit.

PRESIDENT TALABANI: Well, Mr. President, thank you very much for giving me the honor of meeting you again. I think it's clear that we are in Iraq looking to you as a hero of liberation of Iraq from worst kind of dictatorship. And now we are working with your -- with you, Mr. President, for finalizing the strategic framework agreement between United States and Iraq.

And also, we are always getting benefit from your views about how to secure Iraq. I think you know very well that you and we in Iraq achieved very good successes on terrorism. Now I can say all parts of Iraq liberated from terrorist control and activities. It's true that some groups remain hiding themselves from here or there, but there's no place, no inch of Iraqi land under the control of terrorist activities. There are some terrorist -- still groups working -- hiding themself, and thanks to you and sacrifice of your brave army and to Iraqi people, now we can live in peace and security.

And Iraq government started to spend the money which we have for serving the Iraqi people and rebuilding the country, reconstructing the country. Not only we liberated our country from terrorist activities, but also from militias, outlawed militias who are also making troubles and danger for Iraqi people.

And as you have heard, the Basra city, Sadr City, (inaudible), Ninawa, Baqubah -- all these cities are now liberated. So we are thankful to you and to your people, your army. We hope that the agreement about this strategy formation will be signed soon.

And as usual, we are working, our parliament is working now for finalizing the draft of a new law for election provinces, and I hope that, as I heard the news yesterday, I hope that today it will be finalized, because the groups -- head of groups of parliament are now gathering in parliament to reach -- to finalize this.

In our country, we are now busy to reconstruct our country and to rebuild our country. And I am glad to tell you, Mr. President, that our position with our neighbors is improved very well -- with Turkey, with Syria, with Iran, with the Arab countries. The relation is notable now and we have no problem with any of these countries. In contrary, many, many new ambassadors are ing --

PRESIDENT BUSH: That's right.

PRESIDENT TALABANI: -- to our country from Arab countries. And our visit of Prime Minister of Turkey, Mr. Tayyip Recep Erdogan, and of the -- His Majesty, the King of Jordan, to Baghdad were very successful, and was encouraging to Iraqi people to understand that they have friends outside Iraq.

So I hope that friendship and relation between your great people and the Iraqi people will continue and will be strengthened. And we will never forget what you have done for our people.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you, President.

1、六級攷的不是才能!六級的詞匯是有限的,其實我在第三次序四次參减六級攷試的時候,單詞就已經不须要揹了,每次攷前將轻易记記的100多個冷僻單詞復習一下就能够了(冷僻單詞我在之前的帖子中列過)。然而有一點需求大傢留神:六級的單詞往往攷第二個意思,中文翻譯意大利文,而不是第一個,事實上越難的攷試攷的意义就越靠後,我在這次攷試之前重點將歷年單詞攷察的意思从新復習了一遍,並依据這個規律將一切單詞的第两個意思也復習了一遍;

It’stime(that)sb.didsth.

翻譯:President Bush Attends the Annual Peace Officers Memorial - 英語演講

May 15, 20

12:38 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thanks for ing, please be seated. Thank you. Thank you, Chuck. I have been here ever since I've been the President, in an event like this, and it's fitting because this is a really important day for our country. It's a day we remember men and women who fell in the line of duty. Each swore an oath to uphold the law. Each assumed the responsibility of protecting neighbors and munities. Each has earned a place in our nation's heart. We thank them for their lives of service and we pray to an Almighty God that He bring fort to you during this time of sorrow.

I appreciate Chuck Canterbury, President of the Fraternal Order of Police. I thank the members of my Cabinet who have joined us today. I appreciate so very much Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, for being here today. I thank Senator Leahy, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Minority Leader John Boehner and all the members of Congress who have joined us. I thank Aliza Clark, Jim Pasco. Father Vytas, thank you for your prayers. Appreciate Patrick Nigh, who sang the National Anthem; Lee Greenwood, friend of law enforcement.

I thank the police officers who are here. I am honored to be in your presence. I'm constantly amazed by your courage. I thank you for serving the United States of America. (Applause.)

To the moms and dads, husbands and wives, and sons and daughters who have got a hole in your heart today, I bring a collective hug from the people of the United States of America.

It takes a special kind of person to serve in law enforcement. Most people run from danger -- law enforcement runs toward it. You've chosen one of the toughest jobs in the world. And I suspect during times of dangerous duty or lonely patrols, it might seem like the only person you can depend upon is each other. A day like today I hope not only helps our families, but helps those who serve remember that a larger munity here in this country stands with you, that we're grateful for your service.

We saw this gratitude last year in Montgomery, Alabama, as thousands of citizens mourned a young officer named Keith Houts. Keith was shot during a routine traffic stop. He held on two days before succumbing; he was 30 years old. As expected, police officers from across Alabama came to mourn him, that's what happens -- when a fellow officer dies in the line of service, the officers show up -- but so did citizens he never met. Thousands and thousands of citizens came to honor this good man. An overflow crowd attended the funeral; every church pew was filled. Mourners had to stand. An anonymous citizen paid lodging expenses for members of Keith's family so they could make it to service. The munity embraced Keith's young widow, Ashley, who's here. She had been a wife just for 15 months. Ashley said this of her late husband: "I know what he meant to me, but it is important to know what he meant to everyone else."

We've seen similar outpourings of support in other places,醫學翻譯. Last year, in Fairfax County, Virginia, thousands of strangers lined city streets to bid farewell to two officers, Vicky Armel and Michael Garbarino. They were shot while doing their duty. Those who gathered along one of the funeral routes included all kinds of people -- total strangers paying homage -- a grocery store cashier, a fellow from Belgium was there; a local resident who told a reporter she wanted to thank the police who, as she put it, "worry so we don't have to."

We saw a similar scene in Colorado Springs after the murder of Kenneth Jordan. Cars stopped along the interstate, as drivers watched the funeral procession from railings and bridges. Children were waving flags in honor of a good man. One man brought his sons to pay tribute to an officer who he said "gave up his life up for us." Another held up a sign that read: "God bless you and keep you safe. Thanks so much."

That sign sums up the feeling of millions of our fellow citizens: God bless you and thanks so much. Laura and I feel the same way. You know, we shared the grief of the family of Steve Favela, a Honolulu police officer who died last year from injuries he suffered during a motorcade that was protecting us,英文翻譯中文. His death is a reminder of the daily risks that each officer assumes.

I don't know if you realize this, but police officers are routinely named among America's most respected profession. And that's why strangers mourn for the loss of life and honor those who serve. That's why so many children choose you as role models.

With us today are young children who've lost their moms and dads in the line of duty. It's got to be awfully hard. The pain is fresh, and they feel that every time they e home, looking for a mom or dad they love. It's hard to understand the loss you've suffered, but hopefully today you leave with the sense that there are all kinds of people praying for you and honoring your dad or mom; millions of Americans grieve.

And I hope when you're older you'll e to this ceremony again, and find some fort here. Perhaps you'll bring your own children, and share your memories of your parents and your pride in what they did. You can tell them your parents were great because of what they risked. You can tell them they served a cause greater than themselves.

We're proud of all our nation's fallen peace officers. We're sorry you're here, but now that you are, we care about you a lot. And we love you. We're grateful for what they have given us.

May God bless you all. May God bless those who wear the uniform of the United States of America. And may God continue to bless our country. (Applause.)

Only two men are competing for the cup
The US and Iraqi armies were competing for victory in the battle
There are three candidates entering the contest for the presidency
The father of the deceased billionaire contests the will
  Match
The boy matches his strength with his brother
  Match
For food no country can match China
  Contest和match尚可作名词用,习惯上说 a beauty contest、a speech contest,但a basketball match 。
  Agree to与Agree with的分别
  (1) I agree with the proposal(我赞成这个建议)。
  (2) I agree with his analysis of the situation(我同意他对情况的分析)。
  (3) I agree with every word you’ve just said(你刚才说的每一个字我都同意)。
  (1) As I had no choice, I had to agree to their very harsh terms(我别无办法,唯有答应他们苛刻的要求)。
  (2) I agree to the proposal(我可能不赞成,但仍接受这个建议)。
You agree with somebody but agree to something (同意某人的话,是agree with;同意某件事,是agree to)。
(Hugh Walpole)
They might not agree with his opinions
(Oscar Wilde)
I don't agree with a single word that you have said
He is an earnest student of English.
但不要说I am earnest,而应说I am in earnest,与I am serious意思相仿,可译作「我是认真的」。
He is earnest about giving his son a good education.
  Serious即dealing with important issues或not joking,意为严肃的,或不是说笑的,例如﹕
I am serious about doing it.
This country is faced with a serious crisis.
  Solemn则是of a very serious nature,或of a formal nature,或sombre in appearance,意为
  The organ played solemn music.
He looked as solemn as a judge.
She is/looks ill或she is/looks sick都
the sick,很少说the ill,例如: He devoted his life to helping the sick(他一生致力帮助病
The
  pot plants are sick
叫seasick、carsick、airsick。 She felt sick in the car。然则I was sick
He fell ill yesterday and
  today he is worse
  Real、genuine
(1) It is made of genuine leather(那是用真皮做的)。 (2) There is a genuine
painting by Picasso(有一幅毕加索的真 )。 (3) He had a genuine interest in child
  welfare(他真心关怀儿童福利)。
The Nanking massacre is one of the real events is
history that some people would rather forget(历史上一些确凿的事实,是有些人宁愿忘记
你还可以说a real painting、a real interest等。
At last I was able to get
Details of my qualifications and experience are on the attached sheet。
Enclosed are half a dozen samples of the AH19004 combs you requested。
Please find enclosed/attached our latest
Enclosed is our latest
catalogue for your reference或I enclose our latest catalogue for your reference。
  在enclosed或attached之后加上herewith,因herewith是with this letter的意思,加上后无疑
This is a matter of everyday occurrence.
She goes to school every day.
She comes to see us every single day.
has a low fat content (2) The contents of the beverage
  remain unclear (这种饮料的成分仍然不清楚)。
examined the contents of the suitcase
例如﹕(1) The content of the book is about
keeping fit (这本书以保健为题材)。 (2) The contents of the book are quite interesting
  由于contents指具体内容,说书本的目录,自然要用复数形式,例如﹕A table of contents/A
contents usually provides a useful guide to what is said in a book
  Elder brother
  He is my elder brother.
  Older brother
  I have an older brother.
  Big brother
  2.document
  document = 文件
  documentation = 文献
  Form(s) 本身,填好的,没填好的,都是document(s).
Documentation consists of documents which provide proof or evidence of something, or are a record of something.
例: Passengers must carry proper documentation.
  Document(可数名词)
  - A document is one or more official pieces of paper with writing on them.
  - A document is a piece of text or graphics, for example a letter, that is stored as a file on a computer and that you can access in order to read it or change it.
例: When you are finished typing, remember to save your document.
She carefully filed all the documents.
Mr Chan is kind enough to let us use his office for the meeting this Friday(陈先生惠然借出办公室供我们本星期五开会)。 I borrowed a book from the library;借人家的字典当场查查,则应说"May I use your dictionary?",不应说"May I borrow your dictionary?"。
  a handy little calculator轻便的小计算器
  a little house是指小巧玲珑的房子
Stanley loved the feminine facial aspects of Beatrice, her soft clear skin, her large eyes, her little ears.
  Think of 和 think about
  (1) What do you think of / about his proposal?
  (2) He often thinks of / about his parents
I will think about the plan, and see if it is feasible
  (1) I just can't think of her name
  (2) We are thinking of selling our home
  以上是think of、think about的主要异同。
  For example与such as的用法及区别
  1)for example和such as都可当作“例如”解。但such as用来列举事
The farm grows various kinds of crops, such as wheat, corn, cotton and rice.
  2)for example
A lot of people here, for example, Mr John, would rather have coffee.
  (a)such as一般不宜与and so on连用。
He knows four languages, such as Chinese, English, French and German. 应将such as改成
He knows four languages, namely, Chinese, English, French and
  German.
  Fragrance
The air was full of fragrance of violets.
  Odour(美国人串为odor)表示气味,是香或是臭,则须按修饰语来决定,例如﹕
I find the odor of hay especially pleasing.
  He is in bad odor.
  Scent
Al Pacino starred in Scent of a Woman.
  Perfume
It smells of the perfume of flower.
I like the smell in the country after rain.
There is always some smell about him.
"How about" 和 "What about" 有何差异?
时,"How about" 和 "What about" 是可以互换的,亦即意思是一样的:"How/What about a drink?" Where should we go on vacation?" "How about Hawaii?" "What about Japan?" 若是征求意见或打听消息,你只能使用 "What about":"What about the university?" (强调 about 这个字) -- 这是 "How about ...." How about those dogs?" Here are three jackets you might buy. How about the grey one?"。
  By turns与in turn的分别
By turns意指「轮流地」、「交替地」、(one after another; alternately or in rotation); in turn则指「依次相继地」。例如:
  They sang song by turns.
We sang the song in turn.
当然,war、warfare都可解作「战争行为」,有时可以通用,例如﹕War/Warfare broke out between China and Japan in 1937(一九三七年,中日战争爆发)。

1985年,喬布斯雖仍在蘋果任董事長,但卻失去實權(he had not been to any meetings since since he lost his power)。無奈之下,他遞交辭呈,暫別蘋果(with no work to do and no access even to regular management reports),投入新事業的發展,致力于工作站的開發(a powerful but personal workstation)。

Joe Nocera, then writing for Esquire, captured Jobs’s intensity at a NeXT staff meeting: It’s not quite right to say that he is sitting through this staff meeting, because Jobs doesn’t sit through much of anything; one of the ways he dominates is through sheer movement. One moment he’s kneeling in his chair; the next minute he’s slouching in it; the next he has leaped out of his chair entirely and is scribbling on the blackboard directly behind him. He is full of mannerisms. He bites his nails. He stares with unnerving earnestness at whoever is speaking. His hands, which are slightly and inexplicably yellow, are in constant motion。

What particularly struck Nocera was Jobs’s “almost willful lack of tact 。” It was more than just an inability to hide his opinions when others said something he thought dumb; it was a conscious readiness, even a perverse eagerness, to put people down, humiliate them, show he was smarter. When Dan’l Lewin handed out an organization chart, for example, Jobs rolled his eyes. “These charts are bullshit,” he interjected. Yet his moods still swung wildly, as at Apple. A finance person came into the meeting and Jobs lavished praise on him for a “really, really great job on this”; the previous day Jobs had told him, “This deal is crap 。” (Chapter 18 NeXT: To Be on Your Own)

如 William Jafferson Clinton。

I. 個人名

Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Catherine.

II.

如 Donald => Don, Timothy => Tim.

Edward => Ned.

2. +ie 或 -y 如:Don => Donnie, Tim => Timmy.

Anthony => Tony, Beuben => Ben.

Clinton.

Mac-, Fitz-

Carter, Smith.

Black, Longfellow.

Bird, Rice.

Burne-Jones.

Smith, Miller,

Johnson, Brown, Jones, Williams.

IV.

Dr., Prof., Pres.

2、時態:文章絕大部分使用的是一般現在時;一般現在時第三人稱要使用單數;使用過去發生的事例時用的是過去時;

A、TWE要求必須用鈆筆寫作文,你要自己准備好鈆筆和橡皮。橡皮要有韌性,太硬會擦破紙,有錯誤要擦乾淨再改;
